on becoming picky

March 02, 2006

i've realized a slight problem that commonly occurs when i try to purchase consumer goods: the time it takes to choose the best suited item amongst its competitors has become longer and more arduous. i believe this because, after having used similar items that need replacing or upgrading, i've come to understand which features are necessary and useful/functional for my needs.

a close friend mentioned something similar to this a couple of years ago. she said she began to order meals at restaurants with ingredients omitted (e.g. hold the onions) and subsequently thought that she was being the obligatory picky, obnoxious, and complicated customer. then it hit her: she wasn't trying to make the server's life a little more hellacious--she realized that over the years she'd come to know what she likes.

i find myself with similar thoughts if i'm at a store. i spend more and more time searching for a product with a mental list of what it should or shouldn't have as a feature. occasionally i'll abandon the entire shopping trip without making a purchase because i won't want to settle for less. am i being picky? hell yeah. beginning in high school i continually varied the types of products purchased as a sort of trial period. now that i've sampled everything i'm ready to choose something specific and run with it for a long while.

i may have wasted a bit of money with the product sampling, but it's always good to test the waters before settling in with something prematurely. it takes me three times as long to shop for beauty products (shampoo, especially), clothing, purses, shoes, computer parts, electronic goods; and in the future it will be cars and homes. chevrolet sucks.

it's all pretty obvious and everyone does it. you have to do it. but have you realized how much longer it takes to pick out something than the first or second time you made a similar purchase? do you notice that you reject certain things because one small feature is too essential to live without? i don't know. i just thought it was ridiculous when i spent an hour amidst a small selection of purses last week. i finally decided on one (reluctantly), walked around the store for a brief moment, then returned the purse to its respective rack and left empty handed. perhaps i'll try to convince myself "you'll learn to like it" so i can save some time and own more shit. perhaps.

This is a personal website for a (nearly) 25 year-old femme fatale who breathes, works, and plays in Texas. Most of what one may find here are crafty vignettes ripped from the headlines of her life. She also has an odd fascination with ninjas—the black-masked killing machines, not the two-wheeled crotch-rockets. Those are dumb. Intrigued? Read more.
