the devil has no sole
December 27, 2005
i recently acquired my oldest brother's old job when he moved on to a different company. even with my limited knowledge of computer hardware the owner of this small company "had no objections in hiring [brother]'s sister." the old adage is true: it's not what you know, but who you know.
(i was very reluctant to apply for this job, but the mother's pestering was getting worse and worse with every passing week. i'm not keen on getting ahead based solely on who i know and what connections i have. people do it all the time and networking is incredibly important, but there's nothing like the satisfaction one obtains by achieving something based solely on their own skills.)
today marked my first day of full-time employment. today also marked the day that i broke not one, but two shoes. i'm in the midst of accumulating business-casual work attire and i haven't had the chance to go shopping for shoes. i had to dig around in my mother's closet just for some dress pumps to wear to the interview and i had to wear the same pumps for my first day. not even half way through the work day one of the soles came completely unglued. i heard something drop on the ground, turned to look, and there was the sole with its little gray, egg-shaped non-skid pad on the bottom. i was baffled.
after a lonely lunch break at a nearby subway sandwich shop i managed to lose the other shoe's sole as well. what kind of joke is that? i was just waiting for both of the heels to break and a swarm of locusts to come bursting through the windowless walls to top off the day. and don't even get me started on the incredibly high rise of dress slacks. i'm so used to wearing super/ultra/mega low-rise pants that i can't stand having a waistband touching my bellybutton. how can you working women stand work wear? navel-attacking pants, high-heeled shoes, soles that come unglued, no flip-flops? oh, the madness.
